Mastering your conflict of interest duties

Understand the rules for disclosing and managing different types of conflicts and what can go wrong

Masterclass overview

The proper disclosure and management of conflicts of interest is a core obligation of a local councillor under the Code of Conduct.

It is essential to build community trust in your decision making and in Council. In the worse case scenario, the failure to properly manage conflicts of interest can result in corrupt conduct and unlawful decision making. On a more personal level, it is likely to damage your reputation and can result in findings of misconduct and possibly criminal charges.

Given we are notoriously bad at seeing our own conflicts and there is a personal onus on councillors to know the rules, it is critical skill set for all councillors.

This interactive masterclass is based on real-life case studies from recent Tribunal decisions and includes practical examples of what goes wrong when the rules are not followed.

The online masterclass is one hour with a maximum of 10 participants.

Who should do this masterclass?

This interactive masterclass is for:

  • newly elected local councillors who want to understand the rules on how to disclose and manage different types of conflicts and how to avoid common pitfalls
  • more experienced councillors who wish to deepen their knowledge on managing conflicts of interest

Masterclass outcomes
