Explore your motivations for running for local government and identify the issues that matter most to you and your community.
Day 2 - Values
Define your leadership values and examine how your values align with civic leadership
Day 3 -Skills
Take an inventory of your skills, both professional and personal and consider how these skills can be applied to civic leadership.
Day 4 - Time
Consider the time required to serve your community and evaluate how this fits with the rest of your life.
Day 5 -Network
Understand the importance of having a cheer squad and challenge network to support you through your term in office.
Day 6 - Knowledge
Familiarise yourself with the legislative framework and the roles and responsibilities of a local councillor.
Day 7 - Decision time
Make an informed decision about whether standing in the election is the right fit for you in this point of your life.

qualified mediator, lawyer and conflict coach with 20 years experience in the
local government industry. Her passion
is helping communities work better
together.
She strongly believes in the power of
local leaders to transform local
communities. As an experienced Code
of Conduct reviewer and trainer, Emma
brings unique insights into the
challenges local councillors face.

This challenge is for community members thinking about running in the upcoming local government election in New South Wales.
Is the challenge free?
Yes - its absolutely free.
Can I do the challenge if I live somewhere else?
If you live in another State, such as a Queensland or Victoria, you can still do the challenge. Heads up though, some of the content is jurisdiction specific.
How does the challenge work?
You will receive a daily email with powerful insights into becoming a councillor. Each email includes prompt questions or an activity for you to complete that promotes deeper reflection on this big decision. It is best to work through the activities in order. Once you have finished you have the option to chat to us about your decision.
What do I need?
All you need for this challenge is an internet connection, device and somewhere to write down your reflections. We suggest you take 15 minutes each day to complete the challenge activity.
